Question: What is the difference between a partial rebreather mask and a nonrebreather mask?
Answer: A partial rebreather uses a reservoir to capture some exhaled gas for rebreathing whereas a nonrebreather does not allow you to suck any of your carbon dioxide back in. With a partial rebreather, there are vents on the side of the mask that let room air mix freely with the supplied oxygen, but on a nonrebreather, one or both vents are closed so that the patient is getting full oxygen. The vents open when the patient exhales, allowing the carbon dioxide to escape, but inhaling closes these valves.
