Question:
Why would we tell someone who is hyperventilating to breath into a paper bag? Really THINK about this before you flip the card to see the answer.
Answer:
If someone is hyperventilating, they are rapidly breathing out all of their pCO2 (carbon dioxide). When we LOSE pCO2, our ph level rises. Identify the problem and then treat it. The PROBLEM is not enough pCO2, so we need more. We can rebreath it if we expel it into a paper bag and then suck it back in. We are not sucking in as much oxygen, but instead, we are breathing in pCO2. This should fix the problem.
