Radical Massachusetts guy that wanted to break from Church of England and founder of Rhode Island, aided by friendly Indians, encouraged freedom of religion. Colonists tried to ship him back to England but he foiled their plans. He challenged the church’s authority and was labeled a heretic because of his reasoning for separation of church and state and was subsequently banished. He also challenged the Bay Colony charter’s legality by saying that they didn’t offer any compensation to the Indians for taking the Indian’s land.
