Following World War II, the US formed NATO which was a common defense military alliance with unified military command under US leadership. In response to NATO, which the Soviets believed was directed against them, the Soviets created the Warsaw Pact which forced the Eastern European countries into a military alliance with the Soviet Union. The creation of the Warsaw Pact gave the Soviet Union justification for stationing their troops in Eastern European countries.
