Answer:
Pinel was placed in charge of an asylum in Paris in 1792. Appalled by the treatment of the patients in the asylum, Pinel created reforms, allowing the patients time outside and insisting that they be treated humanely. Major reforms in the treatment of the mentally ill followed.
