found in skin, mouth lining, and vaginal
lining. This tissue is mainly for
protection and allows little diffusion or absorption. The cells in the lower level may actually be
columnar or cuboidal. These are the only
cells in this tissue that is metabolically active. As surface cells are sloughed off lower cells
move up and take on the squamous shape.
