Wernicke’s aphasia Brain disorder of the temporal lobe characterized by fluid, yet improperly ordered speech. This disorder is a window into the speech and language centers of the brain. Damage to this region causes a loss of syntax (word order) and a general distortion of speech. Patients suffering from this condition usually don’t understand spoken language. Broca’s aphasiacs, in contrast, usually understand the meaning of words, but have trouble speaking.
