Flashcard Set Questions
1. Photosynthesis
Chemical reaction wherein light is converted to chemical energy.
2. Chloroplast
Organelle of a plant cell containing the green pigment responsible for photosynthesis.
3. Autotrophs
Organisms that convert sunlight into energy.
4. Fungus
Organism belonging to its own kingdom that breaks down and recycles nutrients.
5. Sclerenchyma cell
Woody cells that give a plant strength and structure and are usually dead at maturity.
6. Vascular system
System of tissues that transports water and nutrients to all parts of a plant.
7. Gymnosperms
Lineage of plants that produce naked seeds (seeds that are not inside a fruit).
8. Stomata
Opening in the cuticle of the plant that controls water loss.
9. Terminal buds
Main area of primary growth in a newly forming plant shoot.
10. Taproot system
Type of plant root system that consists of one main branch and smaller lateral offshoots.
Photosynthesis Chemical reaction wherein light is converted to chemical energy. At first glance, this process seems simple: that green substance called chlorophyll transforms water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and sugar. But take a closer look and you’ll find a reaction broken into two complex stages: one light dependent, the other not. Melvin Calvin discovered this dark reaction which is, not surprisingly, named after him.
