Flashcard Set Questions
1. Rosalind Franklin
X-ray crystallographer responsible for identifying DNA’s double helix.
2. Drosophila
Common insect crucial to the field of genetics.
3. Human genome project
Scientific project that sequenced the human chromosomes’ three billion base pairs.
4. Gregor Mendel
Botanist who used his knowledge of plants to establish the field of genetics.
5. Mutagenesis
Process that alters the genetic information of an organism or a virus.
6. Recapitulation theory
Hypothesis stating that development in the womb mirrors evolutionary development of the species.
7. Taxonomy
Classification of organisms into different groups based on structural and functional characteristics.
8. Catastrophism
Theory now known to be incorrect, hypothesizing that calamitous geological forces caused mass extinctions.
9. Hardy-Weinberg Formula
Formula that determines if a population that reproduces sexually experiences a genetic equilibrium.
10. Speciation
Evolutionary process by which new species are formed.

Rosalind Franklin X-ray crystallographer responsible for identifying DNA’s double helix. This British scientist used X-rays to establish that DNA’s structure was helical. After her work with James Watson and Francis Crick, she focused on the tobacco mosaic virus. Her studies showed that the virus’s RNA was single-stranded and not freely floating. Unfortunately, her career was cut short by cancer in 1958, making her unable to receive the Nobel Prize.
