Flashcard Set Questions
1. Cell theory postulates
Four statements of the cell theory describing cells’ structure and function.
2. Gastrulation
Process that reorganizes the embryo from a ball of cells to cells with many layers.
3. Cellular respiration
Chemical reaction responsible for fueling cellular processes by breaking down food molecules.
4. Glycolysis
Chemical reaction which breaks down the sugar glucose, creating energy for other cellular processes.
5. Macrophage
Scavenger cell of the immune system that consumes foreign bodies.
6. Transcription
Process wherein RNA is synthesized from DNA.
7. Ribosome
Tiny structure found in great quantities in many cells and the site of translation.
8. Yeast
Single-celled fungus found around the world and necessary for the production of beer and wine.
9. Platelets
Nonnucleated blood cells that play a critical role in coagulation.
10. Bacteria
Single-celled prokaryotes that can be pathogenic or beneficial.
Cell theory postulates Four statements of the cell theory describing cells’ structure and function. These four observations form the basis of cell biology. They describe cells as 1) the smallest structural and functional unit of life, 2) composing living organisms, 3) being produced by other cells, and 4) responsible for inheritance. At any time, though, new research could challenge these postulates.
