Flashcard Set Questions
1. BACTERIA
Simple, single-celled, prokaryotic microorganisms
2. ARCHAEA
small, single, prokaryotic microorganisms. Similar to bacteria, but usually exist in extreme environments. Not human pathogens.
3. ALGAE
Eukaryotic, photosynthetic organims. Range from single-celled to macroscopic.
4. FUNGI
Eukaryotic, non-photosynthetic. Micro- and macroscopic.Usually scavengers, aid in decomposition.
5. PROTOZOA
"first animals," superficially animal-like. Amoebae move by extending psuedopods (tubelike structures)Flagellates and Cilliates move by beating/waving hairlike extensions. Most complex unicellular organimsms. Cause diseases, like Malaria or diarrhea.Parasitic.
6. VIRUSES
Non-cells; tiny particles of nucleic acid (RNA or DNA) within a membrane.Cannot reproduce themselves; only in a host cell. Cause AIDS, smallpox, polio, etc.
7. HELMINTHS
parastic Worms; part of animal kingdom.Flatworms and roundworms.
8. Van Leeuwenhoek's "ANIMACULES"
Microorganims seen by Leeuwenhoek through his handheld microscopes.
9. SPONTANEOUS GENERATION
The formation of living things from inanimate matter.
10. GERM THEORY OF DISEASE
Germs (microorganisma) cause disease, and certain germs cause certain diseases. Proved by Robert Koch.
