Question:
How can gel electrophoresis be used to distinguish between DNA molecules (or to identify DNA from the same source)?
Answer:
DNA molecules are cut with restriction enzymes. These enzymes reconize specific segments of DNA (called restriction sites). In different DNA molecules, the distance between these sites is not the same. Therefore, the sizes of the fragments produced by using the same enzyme on different molecules are different lengths.Gel electrophoresis is used to separate the fragments by size. The resulting gel patterns are compared. If the sizes differ, they are from different sources. If identical, they are from the same source.
