What factors cause DNA fragments to move and separate during gel electrophoresis?
Answer:
Electricity is used to make the DNA move through the gel. DNA is negatively charged so the negative pole is closest to the well containing the sample which repels the fragments while the positive pole at the opposite end attracts them.Fragments separate based on size because smaller fragments move through the gel more easily than large ones.
