In the AP Lab on enzymes, catalase is used to increase the speed at which H2O2 breaks down into H2O and O2. How is the amount of H2O2 measured?
Answer:
with a titration reaction using KMnO4 which turns from purple to clear as long as H2O2 is present with H2SO4. Once the H2O2 has all been reacted with, then the next drop of KMnO4 will not turn clear. By measuring the amount of KMnO4 used, we can tell how much H2O2 was present in the solution.
